Job Description

DEA's Portland, OR office is seeking a Survey Party Chief who can lead a field crew while performing boundary, topography, ALTA, right of way, and construction surveys for a wide variety of clients. The applicant must be able to work remotely and be willing and able to travel around the Northwest as needed. Responsibilities include the ability to operate and maintain a survey truck, UTV and trailer, and survey instruments and related equipment. The applicant will be responsible for keeping accurate field notes, data collection, performing field calculations, working with DEA staff and interfacing with landowners and clients. The applicant will be expected to direct and lead other field survey crew members in the performance of their duties, mentoring, and coaching them to advance within the survey profession as their individual abilities allow.

Position Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Good communication skills and the ability to relay complex information to project managers, and clients.
  • Understanding of issues pertaining to access of private land and respect for private landowners.
  • Possess some understanding and experience with the Public Land Survey System (PLSS) in the northwest and have experience locating PLSS monumentation.
  • Proficiency with the operation and maintenance of Trimble GPS, total stations, data collectors, and other various measuring instruments
  • Proficiency with electronic data collection systems and processes; must be able to download and review data files and perform complex survey computations as part of performing field surveying tasks.
  • Inspection and checking of field data deliverables for accuracy and correctness (i.e., field note sheets, electronic data collection files, computation sheets, etc.
  • Must have a good driving record and a valid driver's license
  • Must make safety the highest priority and follow DEA's safety protocols.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Prior Survey Crew Chief experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Must be able to travel out of town for up to a week at a time

Beneficial Experience:

  • L.S.I.T. or equivalent experience
  • Working knowledge of Trimble Business Center software
  • Laser Scanning (mobile or static)
